Date: June 14th, 6:30 pm, 2010
Place: Sanctuary Conference Room in Hawaii Kai, Oahu
Contact: oceantraining@gmail.com
False killer whales in Hawai'i are currently being considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act, and NMFS has formed a "Take Reduction Team" to try to reduce bycatch in the longline fishery. There are two populations in Hawai'i, a small insular population and a larger open-ocean population. There is evidence of a large decline in the size of the insular population over the last 20 years, and this species is the most-frequently bycaught cetacean in the offshore longline fishery. Research in Hawai'i over the last 10 years has dramatically increased what is known about this species and the risks that it faces in Hawaiian
waters. This research and others has shown that false killer whales face greater conservation threats than any other species of whale or dolphin in Hawaiian waters. alternativehawaii.com. Robin Baird is a Research Biologist with Cascadia Research Collective, a non-profit research and education organization based in Olympia, Washington.
