In commemoration of its 36th anniversary and Kikunobu Sensei's legacy of 51 years of Japanese classical dance in Hawai'i, the Onoe Kikunobu Dance Company has assembled a production comparable in artistry and authenticity to what you would find in Japan. Visiting performers include mainland artist David Furumoto, professor of Asian Theater at the University of Wisconsin; and Japanese artists Onoe Kikunojo II, Headmaster of Onoe School of Dance (Tokyo) and his assistant dance master/choreographer, Onoe Kikushiro; as well as costumes from Kyoto and wigs from Tokyo. alternativehawaii.com. This exhibition provides a glimpse into the fascinating pasts of surfing, one of Hawai‘i’s gifts to the world. The exhibit will feature archival images from Bishop Museum Archives along with historic surfboards from the Museum’s renowned collection of artifacts. alternativehawaii.com. Trace the historical transformation of surfing’s image through the centuries, from Polynesian myths of love to an account of an exotic “amusement” that presented nothing but “horror & destruction,” as well as recollections of surfing as a character-building activity and sometimes the test of one’s romantic interest.

OBON FESTIVAL DANCES

Date: June through August
Place: Buddhist Temples throughout the islands
The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making.
