FIRST PERSON: SEEING AMERICA WITH ENSEMBLE GALILEI Date: Friday, March 2nd, 7:30 PM, 2012 Place: Harold K.L. Castle Theater - Maui Arts & Cultural Center, One Cameron Way, Kahului, Maui Contact: Box Office(Purchasing Tickets), 808-242-SHOW (7469), boxoffice@mauiarts.org First Person: Seeing America is an innovative project that combines images, words, and live music featuring images from the photographic collection of The Metropolitan Museum of rural Americans and events that shaped our nation. Added to the images are the voices of National Public Radio’s Neal Conan and actress Lily Knight, who bring people, places and events to life through poetry and prose. Chamber music by Ensemble Galilei enhances the images and words to fill the space with traditional and original Celtic music. |

Free and open to the public. 7:30 pm Guest speaker Riley Moffat, author and BYU map historian, gives a talk on the MAPPING OF LAHAINA. His remarks and visuals cover the years 1819 to 1975. Priceless Lahainaluna Atlas on view for the first time in a century. Rare missionary era maps produced in Lahaina in the 1830s - 1840s. Presented by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation. Illustrated talk on the MAPPING OF LAHAINA by Riley Moffat, noted author & BYU map historian. Moffat presents a detailed review of Lahaina maps from 1819-1975. Many important maps of the town will be shown, especially notable and never before seen are the historic insurance maps of Lahaina as it looked from 1914-1919. These have been enlarged so all the detail is now visible. |

This is the soft opening of a new exhibit space with more than 2,000 square feet devoted to vintage and antique Hawaiiana. The museum is located in the Maalaea Harbor Shops (Next door to the Pacific Whale Foundation). This event is free and open to the public. Ample free parking. |

4TH ANNUAL WOMEN HELPING WOMEN 5K AND 10K FUN RUN/WALK Date: Saturday, March 10th, Registration begins at 6am, Race begins at 8am, 2012 Place: Green Banana Cafe, 137 Hana Hwy, Paia, Maui, HI 96732 Contact: Stacey Moniz, 808-242-6000 ext: 22, run@whwmaui.net The easy flat course starts at the Green Banana Cafe in Paia and heads towards the airport. It's a fun way to help raise funds for Maui's domestic violence shelter and support programs for victims of domestic violence. Registration for 5k is $25, and 10k is $35 or free with a minimum of $25 or $35 in pledges. |

LAHAINA WHALE AND OCEAN ARTS FESTIVAL Date: Saturday & Sunday, March 10th - 11th, 9am - 5pm, 2012 Place: Banyan Tree Park, Maui Contact: LahainaTown Action Committee, (808) 667-9175, web.request@visitlahaina.com Lahaina celebrates the annual migration of Pacific Humpback whales with ocean arts festivities. On Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm in Banyan Tree Park Several Whale Research groups will educate visitors and locals alike. Artists display their best marine-themed art for sale, while Hawaiian musicians and hula troupes entertain. Enjoy a kids ocean art contest, whale photo displays. Free admission. |

MAUI POPS ORCHESTRA SWING INTO SPRING! BENEFIT NIGHT FOR THE BIRDS Date: Friday, March 30th, 6:00 pm - 12 am, 2012 Place: Maui Brewing Company, Maui Contact: Laura Berthold, (808) 573-0280,laura@mauiforestbirds.org The Maui Brewing Company hosts this fundraiser for the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. From 6 pm to midnight, half of the sales from the night's pints go to bird research on the island. Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project is a research organization dedicated to the recovery of Maui's native forest birds, which are facing extinction due to habitat loss and introduced species. The Maui Brewing Company is a sustainable business with flavorful brews made on Maui. Help out the birds and enjoy a beer at the Brewpub, which is located off of the Honoapiilani Hwy at the Kahana Gateway Shopping Center, just north of Lahaina, West Maui. |

HAIKU HOOLAULEA & FLOWER FESTIVAL Date: Saturday, March 31st, 9:00am - 4:30pm, 2012 Place: Hana Highway at Pilialoha Street, Haiku, Maui Contact: Leanna Troesh-Worrell, (808) 283-3222 The event is free and Haiku’s largest celebration and fundraiser of the year. The Haiku Hoolaulea success benefits Haiku Elementary School’s art & enrichment programs such as Physical Education, Music, Art, and Creative Movement. Every year we have popular attractions where the community as well as visitors can enjoy live entertainment, great food, the PTA’s farmer’s market and a variety of local grown plants for sale. There is a free lei & floral design contests, “Made on Maui” arts & crafts, a huge silent auction, the Haiku historical display, plus kids’ games galore! Of course we also have our usual fare of PTA Food, shave ice, and cotton candy. SCHAEFER PORTRAIT CHALLENGE 2012 Date: January 11th – March 11th, 2012 Place: Schaefer International Gallery, Maui Arts & Cultural Center, One Cameron Way, Kahului, Maui Contact: Neida Bangerter (Gallery Director), (808) 243-4288, neida@mauiarts.org This statewide, juried triennial exhibition features artists from the islands of O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i along with portrait subjects who live and work in the state and have a significant connection to the artist. The 2012 Challenge comprises 59 works from 57 individual artists. Those familiar with the history of this exhibition look forward to each new incarnation, anticipating a group of new faces who represent the remarkable people of Hawai‘i. The artists whose works were selected for the 2012 Challenge are bonded by the desire to transpose the human likeness and interpret each sitter through paint, pastel, graphite, watercolor, stone, clay, wood or mixed media into the final result of a finished portrait. |

Residents and visitors enjoy a special night of interaction and fun, punctuated with free entertainment, special offerings and Friday-only promotions from each town’s family of merchants. Maui Friday Town Parties are a safe, fun community-minded way for both residents and visitors to kickoff the weekend under the stars and enjoy our small-town ambiance.
