FREDA PAYNE IN CONCERT Date: Thursday, February 2nd, 7:30 PM, 2012 Place: McCoy Studio Theater, Maui Arts & Cultural Center, One Cameron Way, Kahului, Maui Contact: (808) 242-2787, (808) 242-7469 (Box Office), info@mauiarts.org Maui Invitational Music Festival presents singer and actress Freda Payne in concert. Best known for her 1970 hit single “Band of Gold,” Payne has also appeared in films, television and on Broadway. She has worked with such luminaries as Quincy Jones, Pearl Bailey and Bill Cosby, recorded 21 albums and toured around the world. Her acting credits include stage productions of Ain’t Misbehavin’’ with Della Reese and movies such as The Nutty Professor II and The Klumps. In 2009 Payne appeared on the popular TV show American Idol and sang her multi-million selling hit, “Band of Gold.” She joined Kanye West, Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand and many more artists in 2010 to record the remake of “We Are The World” for Haiti Relief. Vocalists Sheryl Renee and Clay Mortensen will open the show with classic duets. Enjoy a gospel choir tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in McCoy Courtyard at 6:30 pm. |

RUN AND WALK FOR THE WHALES Date: Saturday, February 4th, 5:30 am Half Marathon Check-in, 6:30 am Half Marathon Begins. 6:30 am 5k Check-in, 7:30 am 5k Begins. 8:00 am Keiki Fun Run, 2012 Place: Makena Beach and Golf Resort, South Maui Contact: Pacific Whale Foundation, (808) 249-8811 ext: 1, programs@pacificwhale.org Runners and walkers, adults and kids, residents and visitors are invited to take part in one of Maui's largest fun runs and walking events. The Run and Walk for the Whales course includes ocean views -- you might even see a whale or two breaching in the distance! Choose from the 5K walking course, 5K running course, half marathon walking course, half marathon running course and 2K running course for kids. Starting line and post-run festivities will take place at the Makena Beach and Golf Resort, South Maui. Medallions, lei and free whalewatch tickets awarded to top male and female overall in 5K and Half Marathon. Age group medallions awarded in 5K Run and Half Marathon Run. Keiki race will award medallions to the “boy top finisher” and “girl top finisher.” All runners and walkers will be entered into prize drawings. |

TALES OF HUMPBACKS: THE LATEST RESEARCH DISCOVERIES AND A JOURNEY TO SAVE THEM Date: Saturday, February 4th, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm No host cocktails at 6:00 pm. He will also present reports from Pacific Whale Foundation's ongoing whale research in Australia, Latin America, Europe, Oceania and Hawai'i and will share insights and adventures from his ongoing journey to help save whales, including his participation in the International Whaling Commission's Scientific Committee. Play along with Judy’s Gang and take your best guess at the Jeopardy questions to reveal the clues that bring you to the dances. It could be all about Elvis, the Jacksons, a megamix from Grease or many other show surprises. Tap and jazz dancers from age 3 to seasoned citizens will provide the answers through their spirited tap and jazz moves. Dance Jeopardy is produced, directed and choreographed by Judy Ridolfino. |

2ND ANNUAL MAUI OPEN STUDIOS EVENT: SELF-GUIDED TOURS OF ARTIST AND ARTISAN STUDIOS Date: Saturday, February 4th, 9:00 PM, 2012 Place: Maui Tropical Plantation - 1670 Honoapiilani Highway, Wailuku, Maui Contact: Carolyn Quan, (415) 450-1307, mauiopenstudios@gmail.com The Annual Maui Open Studios Event is the first island-wide event of its kind in Hawaii. It spans over all 4 weekends in February. It consists of a festive Opening Celebration/Preview Exhibition with live music, cash bar and no-host pupus; 3 weekends of artist open studios; and a satellite art exhibition at Maalaea. This year's event includes over 100 registered artists at over 80 venues island-wide. The public, both local and tourist alike, have a very unique opportunity year after year to experience the creativity that the art community on Maui has to offer. MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY Date: Tuesday, February 7th, 7:30 PM, 2012 Place: Castle Theater, Kahului, Maui Contact: (808) 242-2787, (808) 242-7469 (Box Office), info@mauiarts.org The oldest dance company in America, Martha Graham Dance Company has been a leader in the development of contemporary dance since its founding in 1926. Graham and her company expanded contemporary dance’s vocabulary of movement and forever altered the scope of the art form by rooting works in contemporary social, political, psychological and sexual contexts. In this production, entitled Prelude and Revolt, you’ll see a montage of Graham’s work with narration, providing a history of this iconic artist. It charts the era when Martha Graham burst onto the scene and brings her company to the present day. |

The chamber group’s extraordinarily high standard has garnered them prizes at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. In 2007 the Polish government awarded them the Medal of Honor for their service to Polish culture. |

KEALI'I REICHEL & HALAU KE'ALAOKAMAILE IN KUKAHI 2012 Date: Saturday, Sunday, February 11th - 12th, 7:30 PM, 2012 Place: Castle Theater, Kahului, Maui Contact: (808) 242-2787, (808) 242-7469 (Box Office), info@mauiarts.org Renowned as one of Hawai‘i’s most popular recording artists, Keali‘i is the award-winning kumu hula of Halau Ke‘alaokamaile. His music, chant and hula represent the best of Hawai‘i‘s traditional and contemporary poetry and dance today. His halau has brought home top awards from the prestigious hula competition, Merrie Monarch Festival, and he has won multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for his music in addition to a top spot on world music charts. Kukahi is his annual halau fundraiser at the MACC. |

KEIKI E.C.O. (EDUCATING CHILDREN OUTDOORS) DAY Date: Friday, February 17th, 8:30 am - 12 pm, 2012 Place: Kalama Park, Kihei, Maui Contact: Pacific Whale Foundation, (808) 249-8811 ext: 1, programs@pacificwhale.org Maui's Keiki E.C.O. (Educating Children Outdoors) Day is a free, day-long event for Maui schools that brings schoolchildren together in a beautiful ocean side Kalama park, to learn about the environment and their role in protecting it. This event is hosted by the non-profit Pacific Whale Foundation, in partnership with Hawaii nonprofits, government agencies, community groups and Haleakala National Park. These groups work together to present outdoor, hands-on, science-based learning programs to the school classes participating in the event. This event will feature special youth environmental entertainment. Keiki E.C.O. Day aims to spark a life-long relationship between Maui’s schoolchildren and educators and their local environment. SCHAEFER PORTRAIT CHALLENGE 2012 Date: January 11th – March 11th, 2012 Place: Schaefer International Gallery, Maui Arts & Cultural Center, One Cameron Way, Kahului, Maui Contact: Neida Bangerter (Gallery Director), (808) 243-4288, neida@mauiarts.org This statewide, juried triennial exhibition features artists from the islands of O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i along with portrait subjects who live and work in the state and have a significant connection to the artist. The 2012 Challenge comprises 59 works from 57 individual artists. Those familiar with the history of this exhibition look forward to each new incarnation, anticipating a group of new faces who represent the remarkable people of Hawai‘i. The artists whose works were selected for the 2012 Challenge are bonded by the desire to transpose the human likeness and interpret each sitter through paint, pastel, graphite, watercolor, stone, clay, wood or mixed media into the final result of a finished portrait. |
