	SNACK AND SOCIAL: SELF-DIRECTED SOCIAL TIME FOR YOUNG KEIKI AND THEIR PARENTS Date: Wednesday, October 3rd, 10:00am-11:00am, 2012 Place: Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village, Big Island Contact: (808) 967-8222, info@volcanoartcenter.org Bring a healthy snack to share and join our group of toddlers and parents for a picnic and walk through the Niaulani Forest. 	THE ARTS AND TRADITIONS OF HULA AT KILAUEA - THE VOLCANO ART CENTER Date: Saturday, October 13th, 10:30am - 11:30am, 2012 Place: Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village, Big Island Contact: (808) 967-8222, info@volcanoartcenter.org This VAC program features an outdoor Hula Kahiko Informance with kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah. A 50-minute narrated demonstration of the preparation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant at the hula platform in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near VAC Gallery. Audience are encouraged to bring sitting mat and sun/rain gear. On the same day, there is a hands-on cultural demonstration from 9:30AM to 1:30PM on the gallery porch. All events are free (donations welcome); park entrance fees apply.
	AT THE ONOULI CROSSROADS: NOTABLE RESIDENTS OF CHRIST CHURCH AND CENTRAL KONA UNION CEMETERIES Date: Wednesday, October 31st, 5:30pm - 7pm, 2012 Place: West Hawai`i Civic Center, Kealakehe Parkway, Kailua Kona, Big Island Contact: Hawai‘i Volcanoes Institute, (808) 985-7373, institute@fhvnp.org Maile Melrose is a lifelong resident and well-known historian of Kona. Always interested in Hawaiian history, she has been associated with Kona Historical Society for the past 20 years and has been leading KHS’ “world renowned” cemetery tours for several years. She is known to captivate her audience with tales of murder, arson and betrayal, as well as loyalty and love, which took place in the previously sleepy districts of Kona. This is the October portion of a community lecture series for 2012 that spotlights local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects. Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawai’i, this lecture series is a gift from the Society to the community that has supported it for so long. Free of charge, it is open to all, residents and visitors alike.

	ALOHA FRIDAYS! Variable hula art offerings of hula lessons, lei making, storytelling, lauhala weaving or `ukulele lessons will be offered in these weekly sessions. Volcano Art Center Gallery porch at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Everyone is welcome and all events are free (donations welcome); park entrance fees apply.
	KOKUA KAILUA Date: (Sundays) July 15th, August 26th, September 16th, October 21st, November 18th, December 16th, 1 pm - 6 pm, 2012 Place: Historic Kailua Village, Big Island Contact: Dorlene Chao, (808) 936-9202, dorlenechao@yahoo.com Spend an afternoon strolling Alii Drive, which is closed to traffic one Sunday each month during Kokua Kailua. Kailua Village is home to historical sites such as Mokuaikaua Church, Ahuena Heiau and Hulihee Palace. Friendly vendors, craftspeople, merchants plus free entertainment and seaside restaurants offering a wide variety of food choices. A festive family-friendly day!
	BREAD BAKING AT THE PORTUGUESE STONE OVEN - KONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY Date: Every Thursday between 10:00 am - 1:00 pm & Every 2nd Tuesday of the month Place: In the pasture below Kona Historical Society headquarters in Kealakekua, Big Island Contact: Kona Historical Society, (808) 323-3222, khs@konahistorical.org The Kona Historical Society’s Portuguese Stone Oven is a reproduction of a typical oven used by the Portuguese immigrants who came to Kona in the 1880’s. Join the process of panning the dough and baking 96 loaves! The program is FREE and the bread is $7 per loaf. Bring your lunch and make a day of it with an oven-side picnic in the pasture. We hope to see you at the Portuguese Stone Oven in the pasture below KHS headquarters in Kealakekua.
