THE ARTS AND TRADITIONS OF HULA AT KILAUEA - AT THE VOLCANO ART CENTER Date: Saturday, August 11th, 10:30am-11:30am, 2012 Place: Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village, Big Island Contact: (808) 967-8222, info@volcanoartcenter.org This VAC program features an outdoor Hula Kahiko Informance with kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah. A 50-minute narrated demonstration of the preparation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant at the hula platform in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near VAC Gallery. Audience are encouraged to bring sitting mat and sun/rain gear. On the same day, there is a hands-on cultural demonstration from 9:30AM to 1:30PM on the gallery porch. All events are free (donations welcome); park entrance fees apply. |

THE 53RD ANNUAL HAWAIIAN INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH TOURNAMENT Date: August 12th - 18th, 7 am - 4:30 pm, 2012 Place: Kailua Pier, Kona, Big Island Contact: Peter Fithian, hibtkona@aol.com Mark your fishing calendars for another exciting Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) scheduled for August 12-18 in Kona, Hawaii. This prestige Tournament built on strict International Game Fish Association (IGFA) rules for world records starting fishing Monday, August 13 at 8am sharp from Kailua Bay. Last fishing day ends Friday, August 17 at exactly 4:30 pm. The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is underwritten by the generosity of the County of Hawaii, Research and Development and sponsored in part by KWXX Radio and numerous corporate and community donors. |
VAC’S RAIN FOREST RUNS - THE VOLCANO ART CENTER Date: Saturday, August 18th, 7am, 2012 Place: Volcano Village - Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, Big Island Contact: Sharron at (808) 967-8240 or (808) 967-8222, info@volcanoartcenter.org This family event presents a half marathon, 10K run and 5k walk in Volcano Village at 4,000 feet elevation near Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. Open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, this event promotes fitness, the natural environment and supports community art programs by Volcano Art Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization. Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano Village. $35-75 registration fees. |

THE CULTURE OF THE CANOE ~ `HE `INOA NO LILI`UOKALANI/IN THE NAME OF LILI`UOKALANI Date: Wednesday, August 29th, 5:30pm - 7 pm, 2012 Place: West Hawaii Civic Center, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Hwy., Kailua-Kona, Big Island Contact: Kona Historical Society, (808) 323-3222, khs@konahistorical.org Hannah Springer, kama‘aina of the ahupua‘a of Kaupulehu and daughter of Hu`e Hu`e Ranch, will lead this talk, along with local canoe club coaches, about the largest, long distance canoe race in the world. If you’re a paddler or would like to hear about the history of the Queen Lili`uokalani Canoe Race through the eyes of people who have paddled it then you don’t want to miss this lecture. This is the August portion of a community lecture series for 2012 that spotlights local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects. Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawai’i, this lecture series is a gift from the Society to the community that has supported it for so long. Free of charge, it is open to all, residents and visitors alike. |

Friendly vendors, craftspeople, merchants plus free entertainment and seaside restaurants offering a wide variety of food choices. A festive family-friendly day! |

BREAD BAKING AT THE PORTUGUESE STONE OVEN - KONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY Date: Every Thursday between 10:00 am - 1:00 pm & Every 2nd Tuesday of the month Place: In the pasture below Kona Historical Society headquarters in Kealakekua, Big Island Contact: Kona Historical Society, (808) 323-3222, khs@konahistorical.org The Kona Historical Society’s Portuguese Stone Oven is a reproduction of a typical oven used by the Portuguese immigrants who came to Kona in the 1880’s. Join the process of panning the dough and baking 96 loaves! The program is FREE and the bread is $7 per loaf. Bring your lunch and make a day of it with an oven-side picnic in the pasture. We hope to see you at the Portuguese Stone Oven in the pasture below KHS headquarters in Kealakekua. |
