STATE PARKS HAWAII STATE PARKS
AHUPUAA O KAHANA STATE PARK (Campsite) 52-222 Kamehameha Highway, Kahana (Windward Oahu) Scenic wildland valley. Swimming, bodysurfing, beach-related activities, picnicking, tent camping at the beach area. Viewing of Huilua Fishpond, a National Historic Landmark, along the shoreline of the bay. Short hike to a Hawaiian koa (fishing shrine) with a hardy family hike (4.9 miles) upvalley and along Kahana Stream. Fruit picking in lushly vegetated forest. Picnicking in coconut grove. Pig hunting in public hunting area. No camping Wednesday and Thursday nights. KEAIWA HEIAU STATE RECREATION AREA (Campsite) Located at end of Aiea Heights Drive, Aiea (Central Oahu) Located on 385 acres of cool forest in the foothills of the Koolau Mountains. Extensive hiking trails. Rustic facilities. Remains of a Hawaiian heiau hoola where healers trained and treated various illnesses. Tent camping only. No camping Wednesday and Thursday nights. MALAEKAHANA STATE PARK (Campsites) Located off Kamehameha Highway - 0.6 mile north of Laie Town (Windward Oahu) Beautiful wooded park on a secluded white sand beach. Swimming, bodysurfing, beach-related activities and shore fishing. Tent camping at Kalani Point section. No camping Wednesday and Thursday nights. Additional campsites are available at the park's Kahuku section through park concessionaire Friends of Malaekahana (see below). SAND ISLAND STATE RECREATION AREA (Campsite) Located at the end of Sand Island Access Rd. (Off Nimitz Hwy) Sand Island, Honolulu (West Honolulu District) Situated on 102 acres of oceanfront property. The only campground within the Honolulu Metropolitan area. Noted for beautiful sunsets. Tent camping on weekends only (Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights). |
