Requirements regarding camping in Hawaii vary by jurisdiction, island, campsite, and facilities. The following information applies to the Island of Oahu. There are no national parks with campgrounds on Oahu. Note: Camping information is subject to change without notice. Please contact the applicable local office for current information.

One of the safest campgrounds on Oahu (security guard on premises) and one of the few open seven days per week. Tent camping plus camping yurts. The following information applies to camping and cabins in Oahu's State Parks. For additional information and free site maps, please contact the above district office or visit the State Parks Website.

  • Tent camping is permitted. (Self-contained mobile campers are not allowed.) There are no cabins in Oahu's state parks but camping yurts are available at Malaekahana State Park (see Friends of Malaekahana below).
  • Campgrounds are open Friday through Wednesday. (Camping is not allowed on Wednesday and Thursday nights). Note: camping at Sand Island State Recreation Park is only allowed on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights).
  • Permits are required - applicants must be age 18 or older.
  • Permit applications may be made in writing, by phone, or in person, and are accepted no earlier than 30 days before the first day of camping. The Application for a State Parks Permit is available in PDF format on the Hawaii State Parks website.
  • The maximum stay per permit at any one park is 5 consecutive nights. A 30-day time period must elapse before a new permit will be issued to the same adult for the same park.
  • Tent camping is $5.00 per campsite per night. Once the permit and reservation dates requested are tentatively approved, the full payment for camping fees is due immediately to confirm a reservation. (Contact the above office for payment and refund policy.)
  • Campsites are shared on a first come/first served basis.
STATE PARKS WITH CAMPSITES

AHUPUAA O KAHANA STATE PARK (Campsite)
52-222 Kamehameha Highway, Kahana
(Windward Oahu)
Scenic wildland valley. Swimming, bodysurfing, beach-related activities, picnicking, tent camping at the beach area. Viewing of Huilua Fishpond, a National Historic Landmark, along the shoreline of the bay. Short hike to a Hawaiian koa (fishing shrine) with a hardy family hike (4.9 miles) upvalley and along Kahana Stream. Fruit picking in lushly vegetated forest. Picnicking in coconut grove. Pig hunting in public hunting area. No camping Wednesday and Thursday nights.

KEAIWA HEIAU STATE RECREATION AREA (Campsite)
Located at end of Aiea Heights Drive, Aiea
(Central Oahu)
Located on 385 acres of cool forest in the foothills of the Koolau Mountains. Extensive hiking trails. Rustic facilities. Remains of a Hawaiian heiau hoola where healers trained and treated various illnesses. Tent camping only. No camping Wednesday and Thursday nights.

MALAEKAHANA STATE PARK (Campsites)
Located off Kamehameha Highway - 0.6 mile north of Laie Town
(Windward Oahu)
Beautiful wooded park on a secluded white sand beach. Swimming, bodysurfing, beach-related activities and shore fishing. Tent camping at Kalani Point section. No camping Wednesday and Thursday nights. Additional campsites are available at the park's Kahuku section through park concessionaire Friends of Malaekahana (see below).

SAND ISLAND STATE RECREATION AREA (Campsite)
Located at the end of Sand Island Access Rd. (Off Nimitz Hwy)
Sand Island, Honolulu
(West Honolulu District)
Situated on 102 acres of oceanfront property. The only campground within the Honolulu Metropolitan area. Noted for beautiful sunsets. Tent camping on weekends only (Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights).
