(see also Other Accommodation Categories) Requirements regarding camping in Hawaii vary by jurisdiction, island, campsite, and facilities. The following information applies to the Island of Kauai. (There are no national parks on Kauai.) Note: Camping information is subject to change without notice. Please contact the applicable local office for current information. NA PALI COAST STATE PARK (Campsites) The trailhead for the the Kalalau Trail in the Na Pali Coast State Park is at the end of Kuhio Highway (Hwy 56) in Haena State Park on the North Shore. Milolii is only accessible by boat. 6,175 acres of exceptionally scenic sea cliffs and valleys which can be viewed from land along the 11-mile coastal Kalalau Trail. Cultural sites, waterfalls. Note: Knowledge and skills of primitive outdoor living are required for backpacking and camping along this coast - weather conditions can be extreme (e.g. very hot/dry or very humid - check with local office for more information). Campsites: Kalalau Trail: An 11 mile backpacking trip to the beautiful Kalalau Valley. Trail traverses high sea cliffs and lush stream valleys with plunging waterfalls. The trail to the falls and beyond Hanakapiai is recommended for experienced hikers only. Ocean conditions are unpredictable and can be dangerous - swimming and wading are not recommended. Note: If planning to camp at Kalalau during the summer months, commence the permit application process as early as fourteen months in advance. (Two-thirds of all permits for camping at Kalalau during summer are issued one year in advance.) Campsites are located at:
40-acres. Primitive tent camping on the beach. No drinking water is available (non-potable water only). Camping is restricted to a maximum of 3 nights. Note: Milolii is accessible by commercial boat from May 15 through Labor Day (assuming good weather). KOKEE STATE PARK (Campsite/Cabins) 15 miles north of Kekaha on Kokee Road (Highway 550) (West Side - Adjoins Waimea Canyon State Park) 4,345-acres with commanding views of the lush Kalalau Valley from lookout at 4,000-foot elevation. Hiking in native rain forest and along the rim of Waimea Canyon. Excellent area for learning about native plants and forest birds. Trout fishing in season. Drinking water is available. Tent camping allowed. Cabins are available through park concessionaire Kokee Lodge (see below). KOKEE LODGE (Cabins) Kokee State Park P. O. Box 819 Waimea, HI 96796 (West Side) Tel. (808) 335-6061 Rustic cabins at Kokee State Park. Very popular - book 3 to 4 months in advance. Cabins sleep 3 to 6 people. Call for rates and reservation. POLIHALE STATE PARK (Campsite) Located at the end of a 5-mile long dirt road off Kaumualii Highway (Highway 50), past the Pacific Missile Range Facility. (West Side) 138 acres of wild coastline with large sand beach backed by dunes. Scenic setting and good views of the high sea cliffs of Na Pali Coast. Pavilion, toilet, showers, picnic tables, BBQ pits, drinking water. Swimming in summer when conditions are favorable (strong off-shore currents). Shore fishing. Hot, dry area. Tent camping. |
